Name: Berry Lemke

How long have you been doing CrossFit?  My first CrossFit WOD was July 27.

Where do you work at?  What is your position?  What do you do there?

I work at UAMS in the inpatient pharmacy as a staff pharmacist.  I am responsible for ensuring that all medications ordered for the hospital patients by the physicians are appropriate.  This includes determining if the medication ordered is appropriate based on the patient’s age, medical conditions, and other medications currently prescribed.  I am also responsible for preparing and dispensing those medications as well as providing information to the nursing staff and physicians.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

My job requires me to work 20 hours every other weekend, so I only get to enjoy half of my weekends.  On my off weekends my favorite thing to do is sleep late and then spend the day playing disc golf with my friends.  Also, when the weather is nice, I enjoy going for a run downtown on the weekends when the River Market is full of activity.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

My favorite cheat meal is pizza with lots of meat and cheese.

Describe your first WOD with CrossFit Little Rock?

My first WOD was intimidating!  It included pull-ups, which I couldn’t do a single one of, and lifts I couldn’t quite get the hang of.  The intimidation quickly subsided as Jonathan worked with me on getting the lifts correct and as I noticed that I wasn’t the only one that required a band to help with the pull-ups.  That’s not to say that those weren’t the longest 8 minutes I had ever experienced in a gym before.  Little did I know what glorious pain lay ahead.

What was the catalyst that made you think, “I have to start working out” or “change your current work routine”?

I realized that lazy was starting to become my normal, so I knew I needed something that was going to keep me motivated and challenge me.  I didn’t realize how motivated and challenged I would be!

Describe your most memorable experience with us?

My most memorable experience with CrossFit Little Rock occurred during my second or third WOD.  Everyone had finished and I was a round behind, but instead of just leaving or pointing and laughing because I was so slow, they all encouraged me to keep going… That’s when I knew I was at the right place.

How has being a part of CrossFit Little Rock changed your life? (i.e. weight loss, health benefits, completed a 5K, etc.)

I wasn’t in great shape when I started, but I was healthy and had already completed several 10K’s and a couple half marathons.  I am still far from being in great shape, but after completing only 40 WODs in the past few months I have already noticed a lot of changes and I know that I will be in great shape one day.  With that being said, I believe that the biggest change I have experienced thanks to CrossFit Little Rock is not a physical change, but a mental one… confidence!

What is your favorite WOD and why?

My favorite WOD was on 10/28, it was my 38th WOD.  It was my favorite because it was the first time I was able to do a pull-up without any assistance from a band.  They were not pretty, but I did all 10 unassisted to finish the WOD… no more bands for me!

What is your favorite movement and why?

My favorite movement is the box jump.  To me it’s not about how strong or fast you are, it’s just about conquering a fear.   It’s about not listening to that voice in your head telling you that you can’t, that it’s too tall, and that you are going to fail.  You just have to step up and DO IT!!  (even after it takes a bite out of your leg)

What are some of your current goals in CrossFit?

My current goals are to be able to actually squat while doing and OHS, to continue to increase lift weights so that I can do the WODs and the prescribed weights, and to stop doing single unders instead of doubles.
